The remains of a Roman Camp situated on an eminence & well known by the name of the Roman Camp. "On this eminence there are evidently the remains of an ancient enclosure supposed to have been a Roman Station but at what period is uncertain. Being now crowded with tress it cannot be accurately examd. [examined]. It appears however to be of a quadrangular form and has an opening to the south east. It contains about 3 acres of ground and from its lofty position it seems to have been wisely chosen both as a place of defence and of observation."_ |

[Situation] It is on the farm of Southside and is planted over with fir and hard wood.
The remains of an artificial rampart said to have been a Roman Camp. from the vestiges which now remain I would suppose its form to have been quadrade, and rounded at the angles. by drawing a little upon the imagination faces can be traced but that on the north west side is entirely extinct. near its south and west centre faces small oval enclosures are visible which [whatever] they may have are coetaneous with the main body of the place, the rampart being of the thickness & general appearance with the outside enclosure. it is [--] some old statistical books that a road lead from this place to [--] great Roman Station at [--]. but after the most minute [eng--] I have come to the conclusion that owing to the high state of [--] which the surrounding country has long been in. no vestiges of this ancient [--] will ever be authentically traced. There is the "Salters road" near Dalkeith as also another passing near The Duke of Buccleuch's demesne, but these are of more modern construction, than the [--] |
