013 [Situation] About 7/8 mile S.W. [South West] of Newton Grange.
An ancient baronial residence on the west side of the River S. [South] Esk, it is surrounded by a neat & well wooded demesne and is the property of the Earl of Dalhousie. The buildg [building] is of a rectangular form and of superior construction. The outside wall of which is about 6 ft [feet] thick, at the N.W. [North West] corner stands the old tower or keep still kept in proper repair - Dalhousie Castle a venerable structure built in the twelfth century, and which a few years ago, received such additions and improvements by its eminent proprietor, the late Earl of Dalhousie as render a truly noble structure. Dalhousie Castle Standing eight miles South-east of Edinburgh the property of the gallant Ramsays of Dalwollie has undergone many changes during the revolutions of Mid-Lothian Chalmers Caledonia vol. [volume] 2 p. [page] 572. "The castle of Dalhousie a building of great antiquity constructed in the old Scottish taste is pleasantly situated on the northern bank of the river which runs at a few yards distance from the foot of the walls. This castle was modernised by the late Earl of Dalhousie and has thereby lost much of its former venerable aspect" Sinclairs Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 2 p. [page] 318
