012 A cave in the form of a cross cut into the rock on the South East Side of the North Esk, and nearly a half a mile up the river from Hawthornden & Capable of containing upwards of Sixty men. It is evidently artificial, and is said to have been used by Sir William Wallace, and others as a hiding place.

012 A narrow road stretching from the North Esk at Springfield, Southward, leaving Springfield House on the east side and extending to Montrose Farm. More than one-half of it is between 6 & 7 feet under the level of the fields on either side, and is so narrow, that only one Cart can pass at a time.- It is traditionally said to be upwards of 1600 years old, and is supposed to be a part of a Roman Road between two Roman Camps. The name is well known in the neighbourhood.
