012 | [Situation] About 1/2 mile north of Roslin village. The site of a battle which was fought near Roslin abou [about] the year 1302-3. It is said that the English Army consisting of about 30,000 men was divided into 3 divisions when one of these divisions was suddenly attacked by about 8000 Scotch & vanquished after which a 2nd division of the English came to the charge & was also vanquished and the 3rd division also came to the charge & was vanished [vanquished ?]. Thus three battles being fought in one in which 8000 Scotch conquered three armies each of which was superior in number. This is the account given by the Scotch historians. Every research was made in the locality concerning the sites of these three engagements but nothing satis factory could be obtained except some made [--] connected with the objects named mountmailing The Hewing, Stinking Rig, Shinbanes Fiel [Field] See Descriptive Remarks of these. "When the peace ended, at the beginning of the year 1303 Edward sent a fresh army into Scotland under the Command of John de Segrave. The English advanced towards Edinburgh in three divisions. The first had scarcely approached to Roslin on the 24th of February 1302-3 under the conduct of Segrave when it was attacked by some chosen bands under Cumin the guardian and Simon Fraser of Tweedale. Segrave was discomfited and wounded. His second division which advanced to support hi only shared his misfortune and the third also advancing a sharp conflict ensued with very doubtful success. The events of this day are blazoned by the historians of the one nation and thrown into shade by the annalists of the other" See Chalmers Caledonia vol [volume] ll [2] page 588. |
