A large circular mound of earth of considerable elevation it is surrounded with ramparts on the N.E. [North East] side and between it & Mavisbank House there are some artificial terraces which may have been part of the original ramparts. The Revd [reverend] Mr Brown of Roslin is of opinion that it was merely used occasionally by the Romans. From the shape, construction etc of this object it is considered a "British Fort" by Capt. [Captain] James R.E. [Royal Engineers]
