TUMULUS [Dryden] Tumulus Revd [Reverend] Mr Brown, Free Church Ma [Manse] Roslin 012 A small circular mound of earth where it is said several urns filled with burnt bones have been dug up - It has also been said in the neighbourhood (not with certainty) that some of the leaders of the Scotch army at the Battle of Roslin, fell at this spot and that their bones were burned & put into urns and deposited in this mound - It is situated between the village of Roslin & Mount-marle, being about 11 Chains (S.S.W) [South South West] from the latter place.

012 In the centre of the village of Roslin & nearly opposite the Star Hotel, the pedestal of the ancient Market cross still remains. It is a square stone (raised a little above the general surface) the cavity in which the pillar stood is very visible. The pedestal is on a circular mound of earth. Roslin was erected into a burgh of barony by James the 2nd in 1456 with the privilege of holding a weekly market and yearly fair. These markets have been long since discontinu [discontinued]

Continued from the other side. On the other two sides (of the Tombstone) are inscribed the armorial bearings of the family - This monument is erected at the south entrance gate to "Dryden" - on the Dryden Estate, which Estate was the property of the Lockhart family until recently when it was sold by that family
