A parish in the county of Edinburgh situated about 6 miles south west of the city of Edinburgh. Its extent is about 5 or 6 miles in every direction but in one quarter it measures from east to west about 9 miles. This parish is in the presbytery of Edinburgh and Synod of Lothian and Tweed-dale.

A small stream gathering on the farm of Craigsterrie and running in a northerly direction through part of a farm which was formerly called Whiteside and at length runs into the Water of Leith a little east of the village of Currie. Near its termination it changes its name and is called Poets Burn from the circumstance of its passing a place which was the residence of Thomson author of the Season.

This streams forms the boundary for some distance between the parishes of Lasswade and Glencross.

Both these have vaulted roofs and the walls are so thick that in the south-east end of the eastern ruin a small apartment is cut out of the thickness of the wall. The ruins of an old chapel with its burying ground which is now covered with water. The remains of this Chapel was submerged in 1824 when the Edinburgh Water Company completed their large reservoir. This Cahpel was anciently called St. Catherine of the Hopes to distinguish it from another chapel dedicated to St. Catherine in the parish of Liberton which was called St. Catherine of the Kaims.

It is bounded on the north by Colinton; on the east by Lasswade and on the south and west by Penicuik. This parish was formed in 1616 from the ancient parishes of Pentland and Penicuik the northern division being taken from the former and the southern division from the latter.

Torrence Charles Borthwick Knox's County Map Statistical Account 1845 Sinclairs Statistical Account 012 10 chains north from Castlelaw. An ancient camp on the farm of Castlelaw. It is of an oval form and the fosse and ramparts are still very distinct especially on the north side. In the Statistical Account of the County of Edinburgh it is said "There are distinct vestiges of two Camps in this parish one at Castlelaw and the other on a rising ground which forms part of the base of Twinhouse Hill." From the slope and construction of the above object it appears to be of the same class as those usually considered British Forts and written Fort in Old English on the plans.

Moncrieff County Map Statistical Account 1845 Gazetteer of Scotland by Fullarton & Company Water Company's Map Mr. Cameron, Clerk Mr. Ramsay, Manager 012 Situate partly in the Parish of Currie and partly in the Parish of Glencross. A large reservoir or artificial lake formed by stopping the waters of the Logan Burn, belonging to the Edinburgh Water Company. The water is filtered in three small ponds and then conveyed in pipes for supplying the City of Edinburgh. The ancient church of St. Catherine is submerged in the north end of this reservoir. During dry seasons the ruins are seen above the surface of the water. The spelling Glencross is here adopted in preference to Glencorse as given by the authorities quoted as the former spelling is used in the parish name and on several other names.

Tradition states that during the match between the hounds of King Robert Bruce and that of the Knight of Roslin, the dogs succeeded in turning the stag at this place hence the origin of the name.

A plain tomb stone erected in 1738 to the memory of the Covenanters who fell in the battle of Rullion Green, The names of the Rev. [Reverend] J. Crookshanks, Mr. A. McCormack and about 50 others are inscribed on it and stated to be slain while "innocently" defending themselves against the enemies of Christ's Gospel.

The magistrates of Edinburgh in the year 1612 gave Lord Abernethy of Salton the superiority of some at Salton for the right of holding fairs at House of Muir. It was formerly held once a week and was the sheep market for the City.

The site of this battle is shown on a hollow portion of ground on the farm of Rullion Green. It was fought on the 28th of November 1666 between the Covenanters and the Royal Troops under the command of Dalzell of Bins. The Covenanters were dispersed with many of their number killed.

Torrence Statistical Account of Edinburgh 012 About 1 and five-eighths miles south-south-west of Woodhouselee. The site of an ancient Druidical temple on the farm of House of Muir. The present minister of the parish and his brother, say that they remember seeing it before being demolished. The track of it is yet visible and two stones remain yet which were not removed. One of those is to be seen in the fence which crosses the site. The circle was about -- feet in diameter and the stones forming the circle were 3 or 4 feet high. "There were a few years ago, the very perfect remains of a Druidical temple on an eminence on Mr. McNiel's property close upon the high road near Marchwell. A handsome mansion house with suitable offices, gardens, and surrounded by a small demesne well wooded and ornamented. This house consists partly of the ancient Tower of Fulford which was repaired from the stones taken from an old mansion which was called Woodhouselee and from which the present building took its name. Together with the above mentioned tower there were large additions made around to make it a suitable mansion in accordance with the modern taste. Moncrieffe, Penicuik Manse 012 A hollow upon the old farm of Rullion Green where a battle was fought on the 20th of November 1666 between the Covenanters and Royal troops under Dalzell of Bins, and in which the latter (700 or so in number) after fighting with a bravery peculiar to religious practice, were completely routed. The Kings troops consisted of a troop of cavalry.

Moncrieffe, Penicuik Manse 012 A large reservoir or lake formed upon the "Logan Burn" and supplied by it, and the surface water of the adjacent hills. The Edinburgh Water Company after filtering the water in 3 small ponds made for the purpose, convey it by pipes to the City. The ancient Church of St. Catherines is submerged at its north end, but during very droughty summers the stones of this interesting ruin are visible above the surface. There is an islet near its south end, planted recently with trees.

Torrance, Glencross Manse Charles Borthwick, Teacher, Glencross School 012 A handsome mansion house built around the ancient Tower of Fulford, it consists of a large square tower in the style which characterizes the Baronial residences of the 17 Century Thus tower covers the space occupied by the ancient Fulford, and is surrounded by handsome buildings in the English style of architecture it is surrounded by a small but prettily laid out demesne, and approached from the east by an avenue skirted with trees, a little south of the house stands a gothic arch of great antiquity with a gravel walk passing under it, it is ivy mantled and presents a very venerable appearance, it was brought from the Old Woodhouselee and placed here for ornament, a little west of the house at different distances, stand two pedestals about 9 feet high, surmounted each by an urn and bearing Greek and Latin inscriptions. They were erected by a late proprietor to commemorate favourite spots. - The present proprietor is William Tytler Esqr. [Esquire] Woodhouselee.

It is called East Howgate to distinguish it from another village of that name 6 miles off.
