012 A small village upon the Edinburgh and Biggar road 6 miles from the former place, it consists of a public house and smithy with a few cothouses inhabited by people who labour upon the neighbouring farms. it is the property of W. Tytler Esq. [Esquire] Woodhouselee in a tree est of the village is a Trigl. [Trigonometrical Station] called Howgate.
It is called East Howgate to distinguish it from another village of that name 6 miles off.
