FORT [Castlelaw] | Camp (Ancient) Camp (Ancient) Roman Camp Camp Camp |
Revd. [Reverend] A. Torrence Charles Borthwick Knox's County Map Statistical Account 1845 Sinclairs Statistical Account |
012 | 10 chains north from Castlelaw. An ancient camp on the farm of Castlelaw. It is of an oval form and the fosse and ramparts are still very distinct especially on the north side. In the Statistical Account of the County of Edinburgh it is said "There are distinct vestiges of two Camps in this parish one at Castlelaw and the other on a rising ground which forms part of the base of Twinhouse Hill." From the slope and construction of the above object it appears to be of the same class as those usually considered British Forts and written Fort in Old English on the plans. |
