A rivulet rising among the Pentland hills upon the farm of Spittal and boundary of Peebles and Edinburghshire and forming the march between these counties for some distance in a southerly direction, it then meanders in a north easterly course bounding the parishes of Penicuik, Lasswade, Dalkieth, Liberton and Inveresk where it enters the Firth of forth at the town of Musselburgh. About a mile below its source a large reservoir has lately been formed upon it, by the proprietors of the paper and other mills along its course, for reserving a supply of water for times of drought. 10 paper mills are worked by this water between Pennicuik and Musselburgh, the trade of which has fostered the growth of the flourishing villages of Lasswade, Loanhead and Penicuik., after passing the town of Dalkeith below the Ducal palace of Buccleuch, it is joined by the River South Esk, and from thence runs into the sea under the name of the "River Esk". Upon its margin the ruins of many venerable and celebrated edifices are yet in being, the pricpal of which is Roslin Castle and Chapel, most superb specimens of gothic architecture in the Kingdom. "Brunston Castle", "Woodhouselee" and "Ravenshook" still ivy mantled indices of the past greatness of Scotland. |
