010 A middling sized village in the parish of West Calder, and about 16 miles west of Edinburgh on the road from Edinburgh to Ayr and Lanark. It consists of about 90 houses, some of which are of modern erection two stories high, slated roofs, and in good repair, but a considerable portion are in a very dilapidated state, one story in height, tiled roofs, & ground floors. In this village are three churches viz [namely] the Established Church, with manse and glebe, the Free Church, and the United Presbyterian Church, and there are three schools, a mason lodge two public houses, five grocer's shops, two smithies, two wheelwrights shops, a post office and a County police office. It is built on land fued from the estates of Polbeth, Chapelton and Harwood and contains a population of about 575 who are principally agricultural labourers.
