MARKET CROSS OF EDINBURGH (Transferred 1756) |
|
|
007 |
The cross, moreover, was the chief scene of all the public rejoicings, was honoured with the principal pageants at the entries of sovereigns, and formed the groundwork of a platform, where the magistrates used to drink the King's health on his birthday. Distinguished in all these ways, the centre of business the place where merchants most did congregate it was altogether one of the most interesting objects in Edinburgh. Unfortunately in 1756, when the Royal Exchange was finished, the magistrates conceiving that it could no longer be necessary as a rallying point or rendezvous for commercial people, and thinking moreover, that it encumbered the street caused it to be demolished leaving only a radiated pavement to mark the space of ground which it had occupied. |

"In the lawn of the Drum, the ancient residence of the Sommerville family, right opposite the front of the house stands the Old Market Cross of the City of Edinburgh. It was brought here in 1856. It is composed of several stones 20 feet high and 18 inches in diameter, and ornamented with thistles, the ancient badge of Scotland. |

Newton Church (ruins of) Site of Grave Yard About 7/8 mile [seven eighths of a mile] N. [north] of the town of Dalkeith
" The tower of the ancient church of Newton which was situated quite at the extremity of the parish is still entire and has been preserved to form a feature in the landscape as seen from the grounds in Dalkeith park. The church-yard around it, where parties have long since ceased to bury has been badly desecrated by the encroachments of the husbandman and many of the monuments removed to make way for the plough. It is hoped that to preserve what yet remains of the olden time,it may still be surrounded by a fence."

A parish in the County of Edinburgh lying in a South easterly direction from the Metropolis. It is bounded on the north by the Parish of Lasswade; on the east by the Parish of Newbattle; on the south by the Parish of Carrington; and on the west by the Parish of Lasswade, and its area is between 3 & 4 square miles. The south Esk enters the parish from the South, intersects it for nearly 1 1/2 Miles and afterwards forms its boundary with that of Newbattle. The surface of the Parish is somewhat uneven; but the soil is a strong Clay, and is highly cultivated. It contains eight villages the principal of which are Prestonholm, Bonnyrigg, and Westmill. On the left Bank of the Esk near the spot where its crossed by a fine stone bridge, stands the baronial Castle of Dalhousie. The mansion house of Cockpen belongs to the Noble family of Ramsay, and is situated amidst fascinating Scenery. Cockpen is in the presbytery of Dalkeith and Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. Patron the Earl of Dalhousie. |

A large modern built edifice which evinces good taste and judgement in its style of architecture and interior arrangements. it is surrounded by about 30 or 40 acres of ornamental ground with a large and finely wooded demesne. it was visited in 1822 by King George 4th, and within the hall a brass plate in the form of a shoe marks the spot on which his Majesty set foot; in the library which is valuable and extensive are several Manuscripts (formerly belonging to the Abbey) of great antiquity written in folio upon Vellum and adorned with pictures emblematic of the subjects of which they treat. The present building is erected upon the spot which was formerly occupied by a Monastery founded and endowed by King David 1st in 1140 any remains of which are entirely concealed by the present building. north west of the Abbey in a small wood is the family burial vault and to which there is said to be a subterranean |

passage from the Abbey on the front of the vault is a stone tablet on which the following is written "Jane, Marchioness of Lothian built this aisle in the Year of our Lord 1705".
"Newbattle Abbey, the seat of the Marquiss of Lothian is a large modern building and the plan of it especially within discovers the taste and judgement
of the architect. In the library there are several Manuscripts in folio written upon Vellum in the Saxon character and every page of them is adorned with pictures emblematic of the respective subjects of which they treat. And in all of them the figures are coloured and gilded with so much delicacy and richness, as to afford a very interesting specimen of the labour and elegance with which they have been executed. These manuscripts had in former times belonged to the Abbey, the monks of which were of the Cistertian Order. It was founded and endowed by David I. A wall surrounded it which is almost entire and retains the name of the Monklands Wall. The modern house is raised upon the spot which was formerly occupied by the Monastery, and stands surrounded by a level lawn con tainting about 30 acres of grounds." Sinclairs Stat. Acct. vol 10 page 216.
David I actuated by similar motives also founded, on the Esk in 1140 a monastery at Newbottle for Cistertian monks, who were brought from Melrose. The place derived its name from the Saxon botle villa domiciiinem. And it was probably called Newbotle by some Saxon settler here in Contradistinction to Eld-botle in East Lothian." Chalmers Caledonia vol II fo.766. |

Parish of Newbattle. A parish in the eastern direction of Edinburgh-shire; bounded on the north-west by Lasswade and Dalkeith; on the north by Dalkeith and Cranston; on the east by Cranston;on the south-east and south by Borthwick and on the west by Cockpen. The superficial area is about 8 square miles. The south Esk runs half a mile on the southern boundary, and, after making a detour of nearly 2 miles into Cockpen, runs 2 1/2 miles along the western boundary and leaves the parish in the immediate vicinity of Dalkeith. From the beautiful and romantic vale of this stream to the surface gradually rises to a ridge, 2 miles distant, ............... point attains 600 feet above sea-level; and thereafter it falls, almost regularly, off to the eastern and northern frontiers. On the ..........is a quadrangular enclosure of about 9 acres in extent supposed to have been a Roman Camp. The principal object of antiquarian interest in the parish is Newbattle Abbey the seat of the Marquis of Lothian formerly, as its name imports, a monastery . It contains the villages of Newbattle, Easthouses, Westhouses, and Stobhill together with four smaller hamlets, chiefly occupied by Colliers. County Map |
007 |
A large and populous village pleasantly situated on the N[North] Esk about 5 1/2 [five and one half] miles S.E.[South East] of Edinburgh. It is divided into two parts by the N[North] Esk which runs through it and over which there is a substantial stone bridge consisting of two arches which is said to have been first erected at the expense of a young woman who gained her living by carrying passengers across the river on her back, wading the ford, by which means she accumulated a considerable sum of money, from which circumstances it is said the village received the name of Lass-Wade. The scenery surrounding the village is said to be second to none in Scotland. There are many handsome villas surrounded with trees on both sides of the town. The working classes are chiefly employed in the manufacture of Carpets, paper etc for the manufacture of which there are extensive works in the village and vicinity |
