BURIAL VAULT (Wauchope Family) [Niddry Chapel] The Family Burying Vault & Remains of Niddry Chapel Nidderie Chapel Mr Johnston Mr Smith Chalmers Caledonia vol.[volume]2 Page 790 007 The family burying vault part of which was Niddry Chapel, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, soon after the reformation the Chapel was discontinued to be a place of worship, and the Graveyard which was attached, was taken into the pleasure grounds of Niddry House, and in 1685 a new Burying ground was laid out for the Convenience of that part of the Parish at the westend of the garden belonging to Niddry House. The Vault is arched and entered through a small enclosure on the Eastside.
NIDDRY CHAPEL (Remains of) The Family Burying Vault & Remains of Niddry Chapel Nidderie Chapel Mr Johnston Mr Smith Chalmers Caledonia vol.[volume] 2 Page 790 007 The Chapel at Niddry was founded by Robert Wauchope of Niddry-Marshall in 1387, and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. See Stat.[Statistical] Acct.[Account] Niddry Chapel "was dedicated to the Virgin, by Wauchope of Nidderie, the Lord of the Manor, in 1389. The decendant of the founder, reindowed this chapel, with a Manse & Glebe, for the chaplain, reserving the patronage to his family. And James IV. confirmed this endowment. At the reformation, this chapelry, and its revenues were annexed to Liberton Church. Nidderie Chapel was demolished at the Revolution, by the Same Zealots, who defaced the Chapel of Holyrood.
