006 | A large and important village situated on the summit of a rising ground 3½ miles South of Edinburgh on the Dalkeith Road Its shape is somewhat like that of the letter T built with no system of regularity, the principal body of the houses are one story high, thatched and in very indifferent repair, which no doubt served ample accomodation to many individuals employed at the coal mines, and other detached manufactories: at present numbers are left tenantless owing to the great standstill of the coal works, which have obliged the inmates to seek employment elsewhere the principal depot of the Coal Destrict is on the South side of the village: this village has a plentiful supply of water from Burdiehouse Burn and which is raised to the height of 70 ft by means of force pumps it contains an Established Church "Quad Sacre" two schools, a Hall. and 4 public houses. and lastly a most singular Cave hewn out of the solid freestone Rock in 1794 by an excentric individual. named George Paterson a Blacksmith, who lived and worked for 15 years in it; it is situated at the North end of the village where it is entered by a hole 3 ft wide tangent to the foundation of a house. from which it runs in a westerly direction in the shape of a corridor to the distance of 50 ft with several irregular apartments branching of it with all the necessary furniture requisite for a household deportment, hewn out of the same material; |
