Site of CAIRNS [Swanston] Cairns J Finny Swanston
Mr Denholm Buckstane
006 The site of two ancient cairns on the farm of Swanston, those cairns no doubt at some remote period were a remarkable size. from the description given of the [] quantity of stones removed there from: and at some former period during these excavation human remains were found, together with some arms. I may remark also that at some long remote period a Roman encampment was established somewhere in this neighbourhood, but the oldest residenters will have it that it was the S.W. [South West] side of Gallachlaw both of which are excellent situations for the like but in the meantime of the whole information, not one can point out near were it was situated though there is not the least doubt but it was either on the Gallachlaw or Keyside.
There is a remarkable standing stone situated in a belt of Plantation on the estate of Mortonhall the tradition of which remains in obscurity, it is of a cylindrical form all on standing about 3 ft above the ground, it stands about ¼ of a mile at the S.E. [South East] Base of Gallachlaw In connection with the above Roman antiquities there was formerly a Roman Road passed on the North side of Keyside where lately an [] quantity of stones were taken from, also a supposed tracing of it was found to the north side of two small clumps of wood on the farm of Buckstane on the East side of the Public Road in what [] direction - else remains in obscurity (see Transactions of the Antiquarian Society)
