006 A small village situated about 1/2 mile of the public road (west) leading from Edinburgh to Dumfries &c In former times this was a place worthy of notice and was 4 times the extent it is at present, still within this last 50 years it contained a brewery and of an early age was the seat of the Baron styled Macbeth, an old tower of great antiquity still remains which is supposed to have had some connection with that family. It is situated about 200 yards north of the village, there is one row of neat cottages on the west side whereas the rest are thatched and in bad repair
