A considerable village situated on a rising ground on the road leading from Edinburgh to Dalkeith. The houses are mostly of an indiff[erent] class chiefly one story high & thatched. The population amounts to about 800. The town people are mostly employed in the Coal mines adjacent to the vil[lage] & in the limestone quarries. In the village there is a church two public schools & public house.
