FORT [Clubbiedean Reservoir] | Roman Camp | Rev [Reverend] L. Balfour Colinton John Finnie Swanston |
006 | The remains of a Roman Camp or Station at the South West side of Clubbiedean Reservoir in a considerable state of preservation. its shape at present is somewhat oval flattened at the sides but it evidently seems to have been always curved at the ends as this not like the general formation of Roman Camps such as this rectangular. However this in a great measure may be owing to the nature of the ground or the considerable time it has been in existence. Its situation is low surrounded by hills and is not remarkable for its conspicuity like the generality of Camps, and from its present appearance it seems to have an outside trench, and an inside one, separated by a thick thrown up embankment or parapet. in a great measure I think it to be of Danish or Saxon construction, some slight tradition gives it as such, from the number of places to which "Dean" otherwise "Dane" is applied |
