PEFFERMILL Peffer Mill Mr Thompson Peffer Mill George Watson Liberton East Mains 006 A farm house in good repair, the offices are very indifferent, with about 68 acres of land attached occupied by Mr. Thompson The house as I may well remark is rather to be described as an antiquity than a modern built farm house it bears date of 1631 and seems to have served at some former period as a place of defence assuming in its present state a place of strength, having walls of an Immense thickness, surrounded formerly with a ditch or strong wall, all vestige of which have long since disappeared there is an escutcheon over the entrance bearing a latin inscription from the translation of which it is evidently to have had some Connection with the Douglas family
