Mr McCauseland Mr Sandlilands Rev [Reverend] Mr Beveridge |
This supposed site of the Roman Station (Municipium) extended from about the west end of the present Church yard, to about Inveresk Brae, and North and South, from about the north side of the road leading from InveresK to the Church, The Rev [Reverend] Beveridge is of an oppinion that the mound, Known as Olivers Mound was thrown up by the Romans, and that Oliver Cromwell, took advantage of its situation to protect the old bridge, and in all probability repaired it &c, In order to preserve the mound, the heritors of the Parish requested that no Graves should be made within a certain distance of it, notwithstanding about three weeks ago, one of the gravediggers unknowing, went beyond the prescribed distance, when he came on a beautiful terra cotta vase which Confirms the Rev [Reverend] Mr Beveridge more in the oppinion the Mound was raised by the Romans. Also from time to time a quantity of Roman Relics have been found here, including Baths spears cement &c. |
