[Situation] On the N. [North] side of High St.
An ancient edifice in the Gothic Style Surmounted on the west end by a spire, with an ancient looking clock. It answers the purpose of a prison for debtors &c. It is said to have been built Shortly after the Reformation, from the materials of the Celebrated Chapel of Loretto.
"The chapel of Loretto underwent a speedy repair but what war & wasting fire had spared was soon destined to utter demolition in the zeal of the reformation; and in 1590 the materials of that edifice to which so many thousand pilgrimages had for centuries been made were carried away for the construction of the present Tolbooth adjoining the more modern Town-hall and assembly Room. |

FISHERROW |
Fisherrow |
Rev [Reverend] Mr Beveridge Inveresk
Mr Gordon Town Surveyor Musselburgh
Co [County] Map
Stat Acct [Statistical Account] 1845 |
|
A small town divided from "Musselburgh" by the River Esk, it lies upon the coast of the Firth of Forth & upon the Edinr [Edinburgh] and Berwick main road 6 miles from the former place, it has a small but well built harbour and does a tolerably extensive trade by exporting coals and agricultural produce to the Baltic and N. [North] east of England, it is of remote antiquity & is supposed to have been occupied by the Romans This presumption arises from Roman remains having been discovered in the excavations made during the building of some houses in the Town in the last century & it is certain that a Roman Causeway led from the harbour to the interior of the Country but neither the Site or any remains of the road is now Known, nor are the houses Known where the Roman remains were found. The name of the town is derived from its having being principally the residence of Fishers but it is now inhabited by people of all callings, it is governed by the same Provost & Council as Musselburgh and helps to elect them as also to the election of the Member of the "Leith Burghs" |

River Esk |
Mr Gordon Town Surveyor Musselburgh
William Steeples Painter &c Musselburgh |
|
This river is the continuation of the Rivers North & South Esk from their junction near Dalkeith Palace, it flows past the town of "Musselburgh", dividing it from "Fisherrow" where it empties itself into the Firth of Forth - in Musselburgh it is crossed by two stone bridges, one of them of very remote origin & supposed to have been erected by the Romans when in occupation of this country, it is also spanned by a long & very narrow foot bridge of wood, supported by 6 pairs of metal [posts] which are inserted in the bed of the River at equal distances. |
