Mr Alexander Hamilton, Farmer, Sheil Mi [Mill] by E. [East] Calder |

This mill Stands on the east side of the River Almond and is propelled by water it is the property of Sir Alexander Maitland Bart [Baronet] The name is derived from man whose name was William Lin, who was proprietor of the Mill about the beginning of the 17th Century and died of the plague in 1645 which raged very distinctively in this part of the Country - A tradition exists that a Proprietor whose name was Lin was smi [smitten ?] by the plague by coming in Contact with his dog, which had entered on [one] of the infected houses. Lin having died, no one would attend his funeral and a faithful Servant of his own had to bury him in his garden - Here the Solitary grave of Lin can still be seen distinguished by a humble monumental Stone, bearing the follow [following] inscription *. * HERE LYITH THE DVST OF WILLIAM LIN RIGHT HERITOR OF LINS MILN. WHO DIED IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 1645. |
