[Situation] At the north end of Bruntsfield Place A School house of a modest Size founded by James Gillespie the founder of the Hospital which bears his name It was erected about the year 1801 and was expected at that time to educate about 1000 boys (no girls are admitted) the children of poor tradesmen whose income or earning does not exceed £1 per week. The number of boys at present attending school is about 300. - 6 pence per month is charged in name of fees but book & all the school requisites are provided gratis for the boys in return besides being taught free. The teacher is Revd. [Reverend] D. Henderson. |
