It is a steep cliff of basaltic columns partly well shaped and part appearing broken and irregular, they are nearly perpendicular. "Great basaltic columns from 40 to 50 feet in length and about 3 feet in diameter regularly Pentagonal or Hexagonal hang down the face of the cliffs with a gentle slope and are vulgarly called Samson's Ribs."
