[Situation] South of the Summit of Arthurs seat 23 chains and two chains in the same direction of the Queens Drive
A long steep, precipitous range of rocks extending from near the Echoing Rock to near Duddingston Loch. It is a steep cliff of basaltic columns partly well shaped and part appearing broken and irregular, they are nearly perpendicular.
"Great basaltic columns from 40 to 50 feet in length and about 3 feet in diameter regularly Pentagonal or Hexagonal hang down the face of the cliffs with a gentle slope and are vulgarly called Samson's Ribs." Petries History of Holyrood Palace & Abbey 1818
