A large plain building [---] 1738 at a cost of £5000 Attached is a garden also play [ground] & pleasure ground & a small [---] in all about 10 acres imperial [--] This hospital was founded by George Watson son of a merchant in Edinburgh whose principal profession was that of clerk [but] held several offices connected [with] the affairs of the city he died in [1723] & left £12000 for the maintenance [&] education of the children or grand children of decayed merchants of Edinburgh. This money was allowed to accumulate to £90,000 when in 1738 the present building was erected. There are 86 boys maintained & educated here The applicants must be above seven & under ten years of age A trade [or] profession is also provided for them after the hospital
