[Situation] Two chains south of Archibald Place.
A large & handsome building erected in 1816 at a cost of £12,250. This institution was founded in 1695 by voluntary subscription & contribution. The principal contributor being [Miss] Mary Erskine who gave £12,000 Scots for the purchase of a building besides several other sums. The original building was in Bristo Street but it having been found too small the present building [was] erected. This hospital is for [the] education & maintenance of the daughters or grand daughters of [the] Merchant Burgesses of Edinburgh. [The] institution is capable of accommodating [---] inmates the number is at present full They are received from 7 till 11 years of age [&] they are Kept untill the age of 17 They are taught genteel & useful education & on leaving they [get] each £9.6.8 The annual revenue of the hospital is about £4800.
