[Situation] Westside of South Bridge A handsome and spacious building in the Grecian Style of Architecture. The entrance is adorned by four Doric Columns twenty six feet in height and three in diameter each composed of a single block of stone. The whole building forms a large quadrangle the length of the north and south sides is 358 feet the east and west sides are 255 and is ornamented by columns of different orders of architecture and within the square formed by the building and along the sides of the building is a terrace with balustrade. The library which contains 100.000 volumes occupies a considerable part of the south side on west side is the museum of natural history there are also a museum of anatomical preparations another connected with the agricultural chair. The first building of a college was commenced here in 1580 and opened in 1583 with one professor or regent & 84 students since that time the building has been gradually enlarged & the number of professors encreased from time to time untill the number at present of professors is thirty two. In 1763 the design of building was formed & in 1789 a considerable sum was collected and the present building was commenced but remained unfinished till 1815 when parliament granted £10.000 year to complete it and was thus finished after a new plan furnished by Mr. Playfair. The constitution & government of this University is unlike [the] others in Scotland as the business of the colledge is managed by the Lord Provost & Town Council, who take charge of its revenew communicate [with] the senators and exercise a general superintendance over the seminary. |
