This is the Site of an ancient Cross & is a point in the western boundary of the parish Canongate A circle of Stones in the pavement intersected by a cross made also by an arrangement in the paving Stones marks the Site but the cross has been long since removed

"A little higher in the Said Street or Canongate antiently Stood another cross called St.
"John's cross: which being likewise taken down to free the Street from incumbrance a cross
"is laid in the pavement in the middle of the Street which Serves as a boundary to the Trinity
"Church parish and that of the Canongate."
