This name applies to a long main Street the Continuation eastwards of High Street from the end of St. Mary's Wynd and Leith Wynd to the junction of Watergate, and Horse Wynd, near to Holyrood Palace. The houses are old and irregularly built, and generally from 3 to 6 Stories high, tenanted by Shopkeepers, mechanicals etc. The lower Stories are occupied as shops in various lines of business, and Chiefly in the retail trade. it Contains Several Public buildings, and not a few remarkable old houses, for all of which Descriptive Remarks are written. The name "Canongate" is also applied to the parish and burgh adjoining the City of Edinburgh. |
