[Situation] South Side of Canongate.
A large and elegant old mansion house, the town residence of the Earls of Moray, prior to the Union. It is Supposed to have been built by the widow of the regent Moray in the latter part of the Sixteenth Century, and was the residence of Oliver Cromwell during his first visit to Edinburgh, in the Summer of 1648. In 1650, Lord Lorne, afterwards the unfortunate Earl of Argyle, was married here to the daughter of the Earl of Moray. It happened, within a few days after this event, that the marquis of Montrose was conducted into Edinburgh to undergo the Sentence which had been prepared for him by Civil hate. On this occasion, the marriage party, including the marquis and marchioness of Argyll, Stood upon the open balcony in front of the house, to witness the humiliation of their once dreaded enemy, and, if we are to believe tradition, the marchioness carried her hatred So far as to spit at the unfortunate marquis over the balcony. It is now the property of the Free Church and is used as a normal School, a seminary for training the youth of both Sexes for the profession of teachers.
