There are no free [sittings] except a few for church wardens. [The] congregation is Episcopal but together with the minister the [Reverend] Drummond separated themselves [---] the jurisdiction of the Bishop of the Diocese and have since [denominated] themselves English Episcopalians as belonging to the English Episcopal Church. |

A large & handsome edifice of the Gothic style of architecture. It is of an oblong form with a handsome square tower at the west end 120 feet high & surmounted by pinnacles. This church was built in 1818 & cost £15000. The interior is handsomely fitted up with seats sufficient to accommodate 900 persons. There are two clergymen attend this chapel the very Revd [Reverend] E. B. Ramsay, Dean of Edinburgh and the Revd [Reverend] B Addison. That the old Kirk or church of St Cuthbert is very ancient is acKnowledged by
many historians and appears to have been built about the eight century. It is older than [recorded]
in Scotland“ says Chalmers "and had several grants before the charter of Holyrood house. Caledonia vol [---]
P. [Page] 780. Cuthbert, the celebrated founder of the bishopric of Durham who was born on Tweedside and lived [in]
the monastery of Mailros often travelled from the Tweed to the Forth and always instructed [the]
people by means of their peculiar language viz Anglo Saxon Cuthbert died on the 20th of March 687

sieges which that fortress sustained in the 16th century the West Kirk could not escape
damage. At the period of the reformation it was an old building covered with thatch
and it soon became too small to contain the parishioners. To remendy this a new loft was
erected in 1589 and the church was repaired the year following and another loft erected in the north
aisle together with a pillar as a station for those who were under the censure of the church at the
foot of which they were place during public worship. Still however the church being too small it was
deemed necessary together with altering & covering the roof with slate also to build a new church adjoining
[---] old one by way of addition this was done in 1593. In 1594 there was also a manse built the site of
which is occupied by the present manse. The burying ground seems to have been nearly coeval with the
[---] of the church but at the above mentioned date it included but a very small space of the present
burying ground being confined to a part of of the rising ground on the south west corner of the church [and]
extending to little more than a hundred feet west from the present steeple. The north side which is
now burying ground was then a marsh and a road from led from the foot of the castle to [...]
[---] close by the range of old tombs at present standing in the middle of the [high] of the cemetery.
In 1772 a resolution was formed by the heritors, on account of the ruinous irreparable
[---] of the old Kirk, to build a new church & remove altogether the old kirk. This old kirk
[---] a piece of singular architecture. One building was added to another from time to time
untill it had the appearance of a number of houses drawn close together while the interior found
[---] no plan presented a multitude of petty galleries stucK up one above another to the very
[rafters]. The new church was completed in 1775 & was built on the site of the old KirK. It is

The north and south walls are richly buttressed, and terminated by a cornice and battlement, at the west end rises a slightly projecting and elegant tower 120 feet in height surmounted by turrets. The interior is well fitted out with seats &c, and afford accommodation for about 820 persons. The incumbent is the Very Rev. [Reverend] E. B. Ramsay & the Rev. B. Addison. Below this chapel on the south side is a range of arched burial vaults and on the East of it is a small cemetery. |

A large and plain built edifice, surmounted by a short ornamental spire containing a clock, it was erected in 1775 upon the site of the old church that was dedicated to St. Cuthbert. The interior is well fitted out with gallaries pews &c, and is calculated to hold about 2000 persons, about 800 sittings are let and 20 pews are reserved for elders & the poor of the parish. The encumbents is the Rev. [Reverend] John Paul D. D. [Doctor of Divinity] and the Rev. [Reverend] J. Vietch, their joint salary amounts to about £900. This church is surrounded by a large cemetery. |

There are about 30 sittings free but none are exclusively for that purpose In the under part of the building are separate apartments for sessions house ministers rooms &c. |
