[Situation] South side of the Water of Leith about 15 chains SW by S. [South West by South] of Bells Mills.
A large and handsome structure of the Elizabethan Style of architecture from an admirable design by W. H. Playfair. It is three stories in height including an underground story. The figure of the building is a quadrangle with the exception of the chapel which forms an addition abutting from the centre of the north side of the building the chapel is handsomely ornamented & in keeping with the design of the main building. Each corner of the building forms a handsome tower 4 storeys in height & ornamented with turrets in the centre of the south side which the front is a similar tower with clock. It is all built of hewn stone and of the handsomest worKmanship. Around it is a park or portion of ground walled in the architecture of the walls are equally decorative with that of the Hospital. The ground is now in progress of being improved with shrubbery, walKs, terraces, &c. There are two handsome gateways leading to the hospital and a porters lodge at each gate. The hospital is intended to accommodate 300 children 150 boys and 150 girls but as yet only 120 children had been admitted 60 boys and 60 girls of whom 40 (20 boys & 20 girls) are deaf & dumb. This institution was founded by James Donaldson of Broughton Hall printer who died at Edinburgh in oct [october] 1830 by his will he bequethed the greater part of his property which was upwards of £200.000 for the erection and endowment of a hospital for the maintenance of poor boys & girls. The building was commenced in 1842. The first children were admitted to the hospital in Nov. [November] 1850. The site & grounds belonging to it was feued from Heriots Hospital.
