A large and handsome structure of the Elizabethan style of architecture from an admirable design by W. H. Playfair. It is 3 stories in height including an underground story at each corner is a tower 4 storey higher than the other part of the building and ornamented with turrets. In the middle of each of the south side is a tower of similar description all built of hewn stone and of handsome worKmanship around it is a walled small park or portion of ground which is now being improved with shrubbery, walks, fences &c. At the SE [South East] and SW [South West] corners of theses grounds are porters lodges. The hospital has accomodation for 300 children 150 boys & 150 girls but as yet only 120 children have been admitted 60 boys & 60 girls of whom 40 (20 boys & 20 girls) are deaf & dumb. This institution was founded by James Donaldson of Broughton Hall printer who died at Edinburgh in October 1830 by his will he bequethed the greater part of his property amounting to about £200,000 to certain trustees for the endowment & erection of an hospital for the maintenance of poor boys & girls after the plan of the orphan Hospital John Watson's Institution. The building was commenced about 1842. The first children were admitted in Nov 1850. The site & ground is feued from Herriots Hospital. |
