HOLYROOD PALACE on the Site of HOLYROOD ABBEY [continued from page 9] a hundred and eleven Scottish monarchs painted by the Flemish artist De Witt. In this apartment the election of the Scottish representative peers, and the public dinners of the Lord High Commissioners to the General assembly taKe place. In the third or upper storey several of the Scottish nobles have apartments. Early in the twelfth century King David I raised a Splendid church and Abbey at this place The present palace is built partly on the Site of the abbey the charter of foundation of the abbey is dated 1128. In course of time it became the frequent resort of the Scottish Kings; but it has not been ascertained at what period a palaco was first built distinct from the Abbey. The oldest part of the present palace is the double tower & part called Queen Marys Apartments, which is the N.W. [North West] corner of the palace, erected by James V. in 1528. In the minority of Queen Mary a considerable part of the old palace was burned by the English but it was soon after repaired and enlarged and Contained five Courts. The west or outer most Court was larger than the others. It was bounded on the East by the front of the present palace but which extended further south. The three remaining sides of the outer court were bounded by walls and at the N.W. [North West] corner there was a gate or Gothic porch arched inside with two round towers on each side of the entrance. This was also the gate of the adjoining Abbey and was taken down in 1755. The next court occupied the same space as the central court of the present palace, and was surrounded with buildings. On the south there were two Smaller Courts also surrounded with [continued on page 11]
