The site of this institution was pointed out by the given authorities and they state that it stood a little South of Shakespeare Square, previous to the removal of it, by the North British Railway Company, The Hospital was founded through the exertions of Mr. A Gairdner Merchant in Edinburgh, having collected by subscriptions a sum of £218 and obtained the aid of the Society for propagating Christian Knowledge he hired a house in 1733 into which twenty children were admitted. In the following year the contributions increased and a piece of ground was procured, near about where I have already stated, when an extensive building was erected on it in which 74 orphan was received, The contributors were erected into a Corporation in 1742, The funds increasing and the situation of the institution not being very agreeable, the site of it was fixed on the Dean grounds north of the Water of Leith, where the Corporation has built a most beautiful house, which accommodates about 200 orphans (See Description in name Book of Sheet II) |

"At the foot of the hill "(Greenside)" is a long level space of ground lying on the east of the road
to Leith that is between the site of the modern Greenside street and the hill. It was given by King
James II. to the Citizens in 1456 for tournaments and sports of chivalry; but has since been turned
to another use. For with the Consent of King James V. and the Archbishop of St. Andrews, the town
Council granted it to a community of Friars whereon to build a monastery which they named in

The following account of Queensberry House is abridged from Chambers Traditions
Edinburgh. "This was formerly the town mansion of the Dukes of Queensberry. It was built
by the first Duke who also built Drumlanrig castle in Dumfriesshire. He was minister
of the two last Stewarts. he was also a rich landed proprietor and a persecutor of the
Covenanters. The first Duchess often resided here whilst her husband occupied Sanquhar
Castle. The son of this Couple James 2nd Duke was the main instrument in promoting the
[legeslative] Union between Scotland and England. His Graces Eldest Son was an idiot of the most
unhappy sort and of Gigantic Stature. Charles 3rd Duke of Queensberry was born in this house
and occasionally resided in it he was patron of the poet Gay, tradition in Edinburgh
used to point the house opposite to Queensberry House where in an attic room the poet resided
when in Edinburgh and where it is said he wrote the Beggar's Opera. Duke Charles's eldest son
was counted a madman he shot himself in the year 1754. Duke Charles died in 1778 and the
title and estates devolved on his Cousin the Earl of March. In his time (Earl of March) Queensberry House was occu-
pied by other persons. In 1801 he caused the house to be stripped of its ornaments and sold.
With fifty-eight fire rooms and gallery 70 feet long besides a garden it was offered at
the low upset price of £900 The government purchased it for a barrack." |
