[Situation] About 5 Chains S.E. [South East] from High School of Edin. [Edinburgh] This monument was erected in 1830 by public subscription to the memory of Robert Burns the poet. It is a circular Grecian temple having a penistyle of 12 Corinthian Columns resting on a quadrangular basement. And supporting an entablature and cornice The cupola is copied from the Monument of Lysicrates at Athens, and is surmounted by a tripod supported by griffins. The interior formerly contained a marble statue of the poet, but in consequence of it being infused by the smoKe from the houses and public works lower down in its vicinity, was removed to the College Library. It is situate at the south side of the Regent Road, on a small rocKy eminence, and in an area enclosed by a low wall and Iron paling. Note. Its site may be Considered as part of Calton Hill. |
