[Situation] S [South] East of Royal Observatory An unfinished Structure on Calton Hill having more the appearance of a ruin than a worK of modern dase, It was intended to be an imitation of the Parthenon at Athens and to Commemorate the illustrious achievements of scottish soldiers and sailors during the late war with France and her allies. The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Hamilton in 1822 On the visit of Geo [George] IV to Scotland, but after the 12 magnificent Doric columns now standing, had been put up, the sum of £16,000 which had been subscribed for its erection was found to be nearly expended and the work was consequently abandoned for the want of funds, in that state it has stood ever since, but there are now And again talK of efforts being made to get it Completed. |
