[Situation] At Eastern extremity of Canongate A circle intersected with a cross in the centre, formed by an arrangement of the pavement. This cross was an appendage of Holyrood Abbey and was placed on the boundary of the Sanctuary Persons flying from justice was considered to have been within the protection of the holy building, hence debtors seeking refuge in the Sanctuary of Holyroodhouse were formerly deemed to have put themselves out of the power of their creditors when they reached this place. The great or Girth Cross of Holyrood has however been long removed. It was at one time a Common place of execution. |
