Parish of Canongate

"This house was probably built in the reign
of Charles II or James II by John Paterson a
distinguished golfer. He is said by tradition
to have been provided with the means by
the profits of a great match which he played
in company with the Duke of York (afterwards James II. or VII.) who while
residing in Edinburgh in 1680-2 used to practice this game. The armorial
bearing of the worthy golfer are carved upon a stone at the top of the building and
over the door is a latin quatrain by Dr. [Doctor] Pitcairn with an anagram upon the
name of John Paterson - "I hate no person"
