"This is the scene of a splendour which has which has risen and become extinguished since
the Delineation of the Map. Lothian Hut, a neat little mansion
erected by the Lothian family, stood till within the last few years
upon the site of this clump of building, enclosed within a small
Court. After being given up by the Marquis of Lothian as a
residence, it was occupied for Many years by the late Mr
Dugald Stewart, whose metaphysical works have carried
his name over all the civilized parts of the earth. There
he received many distinguished pupils, who were sent to him
from all Parts of the island - among the rest, the present Marquis
of Lansdowne. Here, also he entertained many of the most Eminent
persons who visited Edinburgh towards the close of the last Century"
