[Situation] North Side of Canongate An old building 3 stories high [with] a small spire & in front of [the] upper story is a projecting [clock] enclosed in wood work. It [was] originally a prison for the [burgh] of Canongate & part of it was untill very lately used as a [debtors] prison for civil prisoners. At [present] part of the building is used as [the] Council Chambers for Canongate burgh. The porochial board for Canongate hold their meetings here. The inspector of the poors office kept part of it. There is [also a ] room where the Baron [Bailies hold] a court sometime. There are [also] a housekeepers apartments. [The] whole building appears in a [---] state of repair. By the side of [the] building are the remains of [the] Market cross of Canongate [the] shaft of which was wont to [be] used as a pillory. |
