[Situation] On South side of North Back of Canongate A long plain building four stories high erected A.D. 1761 as a poor house for the needy inhabitants of the Parish of Canongate. The institution is managed by a board of directors, chosen annually from amongst the Ministers Magistrates Heritors, Kirk session and from the incorporations. These are called the extraordinary managers because they hold stated meetings once a quarter only, although they may be brought together by the treasurer or by the clerk on a requisition signed by six of their [number] from whom fifteen is selected, any five amongst [them] can transact the business of the house. |
