STANDING STONES [Newbridgel Standing Stones Rev [Reverend] Mr Tait Kirkliston
Statistical Acct [Account] of Edinb [Edinburgh]
005 Four rude granite stones about 5 ft [foot] high and 2 in circumference standing upon their ends in an arable field a little east of the hamlet of Newbridge, and upon the farm of Old Liston, a battle was fought here in 995 between the forces of Malcolm (the 2nd King of Scotland) commanded by his natural brother Kenneth, and those of Constantine the usurper of the crown. the fight extended for about 2 miles down the bank of the Almond Water and a rude monemental stone, called Catstane, is said to mark the spot where Constantine was slain & interred. 3 of the standing stones above mentioned form a triangle enclosing a mound of earth which tradition says contains the remains of those killed in the fight, and the stones are presumed to either be the tombstones of the chiefs, or else monuments to commemorate the battle. the 4th stone stands by itself a little east of the others, and in the same field
