The Battle now commenced and raged with the greatest fury extending through the lands of Wallyford and Barbachlaw, until at last the Scots, were forced to fly, some towards Edinburgh and others in the direction of Dalkeith. From time to time large quantities of human bones have been found, in the tract of land described and at present, some are finding in a quarry at the foot of Pinkie Brae Also pieces of spears, swords, Horses shoes and officers epaulettes have been found in a flat piece of land, then a moss lying immediately south of Pinkie Burn House.

It [consists] of a high street running 650 yards north-eastwards from the end of the end of the New bridge; a Street called Mill Hill running 450 yards North-Eastward from the end of the Timber Bridge to the Links, a spacious but Short thoroughfare running Southward from the end of the Timber Bridge to the High [Street] another spacious thoroughfare communicating between the High Street and Newbigging, and various la[nes] and alleys running parallel with these last thoroughfares. The town has a large proportion of self contained houses, many of them in the Villa Style. On the opposite or left bank of the Esk stands the populous and thriving Village of Fisherrow, which, with the suburb of Newbigging is within the regality of Musselburgh. OS1/11/8/17 FISIERROW Fisherrow Fisherrow Fisherrow Fisherrow County Map Gazetteer of Scotland Statistical Account Map of Roads. etc A small town in the parish of Inveresk situated on the western bank of the River Esk, opposite the town of Musselburgh, of which it forms a suburb. It consists of one principal thoroughfare called a High Street, some subordinate streets parallel to it and several cross streets [and] alleys, and attached clusters of houses.It is - as its name imports - a fishing town, and is inhabited almost wholly by Fishermen and others engaged in a seafaring life. At the west end of the town is a small harbour and modernly erected stone pier which are frequently visited by vessels for the landing of [tim]ber and other goods for the purpose of evading payment of the heavy harbour dues of Leith. A railway [runs] down upon the town from the west and cuts of for some distance a small wing & upon the north. [It] is within the Parliamentary borough of Musselburgh and is governed by the corporation of that town. In [con]sequence of its being virtually a portion of Musselburgh, it looks chiefly to the west side of the esk for its places of worship, yet it possesses, within its own bounds, two chapels situated respectively in a lane leading [ ]thward from the high street, and in the diverging thoroughfare from that street toward the New Bridge. OS1/11/8/27 PINKIE BRAE Pinkie Brae Mr. Andrew Elly Mr. William Hay A small hill or brae extending from near Leven Hall , south westward through Pinkie Mains to the Howe-Mire. It is supposed that on the top of this brae were buried those who were killed at the battle of Pinkie. Human remains have been dug up from time to time alon the top of the brae. When examining the ground I saw upwards of twenty coffins being laid bare by the men working in the Quarry at the N. East end of the brae - some of which contained skulls and bones etc.

A large dwelling house with garden attached, and formerly the residence of the proprietor, but it is now in a very dilapidated state and use as a store house. It is the property of Mr. W.
