A collegiate establishment was set up here, by James III, improved by James IV, and finished by James V, but it appears not to have interfered with the parsonage, which remained entire, till the reformation. In 1560 the first general assembly ordered that the church on account of its numerous statues, and images, should be destroyed, and the Parish to be annexed to that of South Leith, accordingly it was unroofed, and nothing left but the walls, in this state it remained for centuries till 1836. When by the exertions of a few individuals, assisted by the Church extensions Committee, a sum was raised by subscription, and the edifice was completely restored and removated after a plan gratuitously furnished by William Brown Esqr. [Esquire] Architect. It now forms a preaching Station, where Worship is performed by the Ministers of South Leith, for the benefit of the inhabitants of the surrounding District, and the Soldiers of Piershill Barracks
