RESTALRIG CHURCH Formerly Collegiate Kirk of the Holy Trinity and St Mary | Restalrig Church | Mr Stewart Restalrig Mr Carstairs Restalrig Edinburgh | 003 | A neat and Commodious Edifice in the Gothic Style of Architecture, it was erected in the Reign of Alexr [Alexander] III, in 1291, Adam of St Edmunds was Parson of Restalrig and he had a Visit to the Sheriff of Edinbro' [Edinburgh] to deliver him his lands and rights, A Collegiate Establishment was set up here by James III improved by James IV and finished by James V but it appears not to have interfered with the Parsonage which remained entire till the Reformation, In 1560 the first general Assembly ordered that the Church on account of its numerous statues and images Should be destroyed and the Parish to be annexed to that of South Leith accordingly it was unroofed and nothing left but the external walls In this Condition it remained for centuries till the year 1836 when by exertions of a few individuals assisted by the Church extension Committee a Sum was raised by subscription and the edifice was Completely restored and renovated after a Plan gratuitously furnished by Mr Burns Esqr [Esquire] Architect, It now forms a preaching station where worship is performed by the Ministers of Leith, for the benefits, (Continued) |
