[Account] 1845 | 003 | A large and beautiful building in the Villa style of architecture having pleasure grounds and vegetable garden attached. It was founded by Louis Cauvin teacher of French, in Edinbro. [Edinburgh] and Farmer at Duddingston. He died in 1825. leaving the greater part of his property, for the erection and endowment of an Institution for the maintainance and education of the sons of repectable teachers, Farmers, failing in business, Printers, Booksellers and the sons of industrious agricultural labourers. In accordance with the endowers will, the management of the Hospital is vested in the Lord Provest of Edinbro.[Edinburgh], The Principal of the university, The Proffessor of Humanity, The Rector of the High School, and the Ministers of Duddingstone, Libberton and Newton. It was opened in 1833 and there are now 26 Boys maintained in it, when entering they must not be under six years of age, or over eight, and leave at the termination of six years. They are instructed in the Ordinary English branches of education and in the Latin Greek and French Langues. [Languages]. |
