PORTOBELLO Portobello Portobello Porto Bello Mr Comrie Mr Allen Statistical Account 1845 Fullartons Gazetteer County Map 1847 003 A neat and handsomely la[ ] Town, consisting of a Main Street extending east and west with several minor ones, branching from it north and South, the former is the chief resort for business being composed of shops of various descriptions, Inns, Taverns and works of different Kinds, whilst the latter chiefly are the residences of respectable familes and mechanics. The suburbs of the town is tastefully ornamented with beautiful Villas, having flower and vegetable gardens It is situated on the sea Coast 3 Miles from Edinbro. on the road to Haddington, and is much frequented, being the most fashionable bathing place in the locality. In 1739 the foundation of this now thriving and beautiful town was Commenced by a Sailor who was at the taking of Portobello on the other side of the Atlantic, from which this has derived its name the house built by him is still pointed out as being the oldest in the town. Portobello is a Parliamentary Burgh and joines with Musselbro Leith with New haven in returning a member to Parliament. It is governed by a Provest two Bailies and six Councilmen. There is almost hourly Communication, between here and Edinbro. both by Railway and Coaches. Population about, [blank]
