"Craigleith,the largest freestone quarry in Scotland. It is the property of Ramsay of Barnton,
" and is situated about 2 miles north-west of the New town of Edinburgh, on the Queensferry
"road. When first opened, it was rented at about £50 per annum; during the great building
"years in Edinburgh, from 1820 to 1826, it yielded £5,500 a-year. A cubic foot of Craigleith
"stone weighs 148 lbs.It is of two kinds; one of a fine cream colour,called liverrock, of
"which the South front of the Register office in Edinburgh is built; the other of a greyish
"white called [feath"] rock. Stones are raised from the strata in the quarry chiefly by
"means of wedges. The monolithic columns in front of the College in Edinburgh, each
